The old truth that Calvin preached, that Augustine preached, that Paul preached, is the truth that I must preach today, or else be false to my conscience and my God. I cannot shape the truth; I know of no such thing as paring off the rough edges of a doctrine. John Knox's Gospel is my Gospel. That which thundered through Scotland must thunder through England again [C.H.S]

The Holy Spirit can guide a believer to do good works, but Calvin has noted there will always be a taint of sin. I agree, and so our reward for willing works by God’s guidance still involves grace.
I think we agree.

I agree of course; I think all too often we rely on our own efforts, and that just leaves us running round in circles chasing our tails; and then their is the other extreme, where we don’t take care of our duty or responsibility in the Covenant, we think just a profession takes care of it, with no real care on our part, to live up to the terms of the Covenant. I’m of course not tallking about works righteousness. But where the Bible says, that faith without works is dead, I firmly believe that is the works it speaks of above all; fulfilling our part of the covenant in duty and obedience etc. Not thinking its just a mere profession and a lot of talking about God, without any inward change, and that does require duty and work on our part, even while at the same time its a work of free grace.

God must regenerate and guide a basically obedient servant in order for that person to have power for God.
